James Hutton Limited’s dedicated lipid laboratory, Mylnefield Lipid Analysis, has claimed first place in the GOED Nutraceuticals Series of the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) Laboratory Proficiency Program (LPP), the world’s most extensive and respected collaborative proficiency testing programme for oil and fat-related commodities.

The AOCS LPP encompasses two rounds of testing during a 12 month period whereby participants use the same standard GOED analytical methods on the same samples and the accuracy of results are worked out against a number of parameters. 38 laboratories worldwide submitted their results for the tests, of which Mylnefield Lipid Analysis came out on top.

Mylnefield Lipid Analysis was persuaded in the first instance to take part in the AOCS LPP by Ronald Pott, our QC Manager.

Mr Pott said: “We have used Mylnefield Lipid Analysis for analysing fatty acid profiles for many years. The laboratory’s participation in the AOCS LPP is important for us. It helps to demonstrate to our suppliers and customers that the laboratory we are using is doing their work correctly and it provides a reassurance that we receive consistency of results.

“This is essential because the fish oil blends we create for our customers have very narrow specifications for fatty acids profiles. For that reason, I am really pleased that we can show our suppliers and customers that the lab we are using has achieved first place in the AOCS Laboratory Proficiency Program.”

Bioriginal has introduced OmegaPure® fish oil – an omega-3 that can be incorporated into foods, beverages and other delivery systems without changing the taste or flavour profile of the product.

RIMFROST AS is a Norwegian vertically integrated krill company which offers krill oil and krill powder to worlds food supplement markets. The company’s strategy to offer this product in South America has now reached a milestone as the company has been granted regulatory approval in Brazil.

The health and wellness market remains strong in Brazil and consumers are increasingly looking for natural products with a high degree of added value. Krill oil from RIMFROST is characterized by its phospholipid bound omega-3 fatty acid content and clear red colour coming from the carotenoid antioxidant astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is known to be a highly potent antioxidant supporting the stability of cell membranes. As for all carotenoids, the bioavailability of astaxanthin is quite low. However, in association with krill oil phospholipids, the bioavailability of astaxanthin is increased.

RIMFROST SSW 2016 Event Invite

Fosnavaag, Norway – September 5th, 2016

RIMFROST AS is a Norwegian vertically integrated biotechnology company that provides high quality Antarctic krill products such as Rimfrost Pristine krill powder. This pinkish and free flowing powder is a natural combination of omega-3 phospholipids, astaxanthin, proteins and peptides and can be used in nutritional applications for humans and animals. In a collaboration with NOFIMA and Denmark Technical University (DTU), and with the financial support from the Norwegian Research Council, two stability studies have been performed. The results showed that the krill powder is stable and minimal degradation takes place.

As expected for all natural products krill powder is not inert. The results from NOFIMA showed that the astaxanthin decreased over time, however, there was no significant change in the other ingredients when stored at two years at room temperature. The DTU stability trial was shorter and has recently been published in the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology. The results confirmed the high stability of the powder and that the overall oxidation and hydrolysis was low. The use of vacuum packaging increased the oxidative stability of the krill powder as determined by higher contents of astaxanthin and Vitamin E.
